Bullying and Poverty
On pg. 24, Rowling writes, “Dudley had laughed himself silly at Harry, who spent a sleepless night imagining school the next day, where he was already laughed at for his baggy clothes and taped glasses.”
- Did people in your school make fun of students who didn’t have new/clean/trendy clothes or who had broken items like glasses or backpacks?
- Where do you think we learn to ridicule people for this reason?
- How does a lack of new/clean/trendy clothes and broken items relate to poverty?
- Does this mean that children are essentially being made fun of for living in poverty?
- What themes are you noticing about social class in this book?
